Is Mercury High-Performance Gear Lube an acceptable lubricant for my 1987 200 HP Evinrude? I began using it a few years ago when I was in a difficult situation and it was my only choice. The label says to not mix this lubricant with other types. So I drained, filled, re-drained and re-filled the lower unit to insure very little of the old OMC Hi-Vis gear lube remained. After using the Mercury lube for a while it seemed to do fine and I didn't like the idea of re-mixing oils in the lower unit again if I switched back to OMC lube so I have been staying with the Mercury High-Performance Gear Lube. It does drain out a little dark but other than that it seems OK. Mercury claims it is acceptable in all higher horse power lower units and has superior water related characteristics in the event of water intrusion. I boat in saltwater. The other advantage is I can purchase it 5 minutes down the road; for OMC products I have to travel across town. Some folks have suggested I switch back to OMC Hi-Vis lube but can't give me a good reason. I thought all the major outboard manufacturer's lower unit lubricants were interchangeable?
