mercury kill switch

I have a 1971 merc 85hp and want to hook up a kill switch. on the schematic it says use the black wire with yellow stripe but it must be for a newer model. does anyone know what i should do.

Black/yellow is used on the 80's and newer model. The kill switch wire on your motor is orange or salmon color. Look at the switchbox and it will be connected to the same terminal as the blue Mercury switch. If you don't find it, post back and we will figure out analternative method.

BTW - The orange or salmon wire will need to be grounded to kill the ign.

HELP!!..have same issue, have 850 mercury that had the kill switch and motor ran, friend unhooked EVERYTHING now motor turns but no spark...what do I connect to the new run stop switch to get it to run and a photo or diagram would be great!!!!!...thanks

Ron, A new thread is best for your question. Look on the maxrules com website for the wiring diaghram for your motor.
