There is a single hole on my Merc 850, on the lower unit starboard side, just above the water inlet holes. I have a small amount of gear lube or oil coming from this hole. Can anyone tell me what this hole is for?

That is a drain hole that allows water to seep out. So to keep any trapped water from freezing, and damaging things. Some left over residual unburn fuel and or oil residue that collects in the midsection will also find it's way out that drain.

Not a problem. Generally speaking.

That's good to know. The boat hasn't been used for a couple of months and a small amount of fluid had dripped out causing some alarm.
