The side to side movement is not normal. This indicates either a worn bearing or prop shaft and will lead to a leak.I'm not really sure about your spare and have never seen a plastic coupler but that preload pin is there to hold the shaft tight.GL,Ted

Re: mercury lower unit, prop shaft play

Your spare unit should be 1969 or 1970 model off a 4 cylinder 65 or 80 hp. This unit uses a solid roller bearing under the water pump and does not use a preload pin in driveshaft. The preload pin is not to hold shaft tight ,its there it preload the upper driveshaft bearing(cone type). Also the prop shaft will have a step in it at the carrier instead of a taper as it uses a different style prop washer and a coarse thread prop nut. Also side to side play is normal as prop goes thru a needle bearing, you should be able to "feel" the side play be not notice it with you eye. The plastic couple sound like a reverse locking cam........

Re: mercury lower unit, prop shaft play

here are some pics of original LU(no seal pushed in to WP housing, fine thread and pin on drive shaft) and spare.just wondering what kind of job i am up to.i do had water in original LU before i put it into a storage.my first thought was to change a water pump housings gaskets.i have never had to deal with bearing carrier before same as its my first water pump change(which went pretty good).side to side movement, although small is what bugs me and its found on both gearcases.thanx for replys
