I have a Mercury Mark 25 outboard serial # 1045373. The last time I tested this engine, two years ago, it started up after 3 or four pulls. Runs great. My question is, does anyone know the year of manufacturer and original color. I think it is a 1956. It is painted black and it looks like original color. All the pictures and actual restored Mark 25s that I have seen were white or green, but mine appears to be original black. I would appreciate any additional information about this motor. I have owned it for over 30 years.

You have a 1957 model.<br />1957 engines were known to have been painted <br />"Quicksilver Green" & "Sand Tan,"<br /> "Sunset Orange" & "Sand Tan," <br />and all "Charcoal." <br /><br /> http://www.oldmercs.com/mk25.html

I don't think the Charcoal color was offered until 1958. I've never seen a '57 in Charcoal. Sarasota Blue was a good one, though. My '56 Mark 25 looks sweet in bright red and cream - or "Sunset Orange and Sand Tan" as Merc called it...<br /><br />- Scott

Re: Mercury Mark 25

Thank you fellows for the information about my Mark 25. I am especially happy to hear that the paint color, black, or charcoal, was original. Some people over the years had suggested that a previous owner tried to make it look like a newer Mercury OB by painting it black. I hope to completely restore this engine when my back heals. It is a good engine, but it sure is not light !<br /><br />Thank you

Hi CaptJB,<br /> You say it's not light, but compare that to a modern motor in that power range of 18 to 20hp and see how it stacks up - it's a flyweight!<br />- Scott

gawd, I love these ole motors, Mine is a '56 Merc Mark 25E, it is painted the green and sand tan. I also thought it is a little heavy, but when placed on a 16 foot Starcraft V-bottom on Lake Wawasee in Northern Indiana, had me cruising nearly 30 mph. What a blast!! Don't think I could ever part with this beauty! in middle of restoring it as well GO MERCS!! :D
