I have had no luck freeing up a seized Mercury mark 55a and have decided to take it apart to see what the problem is - I have all the bolts/nuts removed from the crank case cover other than the ones with the locking tabs - I cannot get the cover off and assume those bots with the tabs need to come off too?

Powerhead must be removed from the exhaust housing first.------Yes those bolts with the locking tabs must come out, they screw into the reed blocks.

Should be three of those - two into the reed blocks, one into the center main. Did you get the two bolts up high, hidden behind the webbing for the starter and magneto support brackets? And you need to remove the bolts from the upper and lower bearing housings.

I had a similar issue with my Mark 55 - it was very tough to remove the pistons - I eventually had a friend press them out - ended up getting new piston and rings - its a bit of a job getting it all back together as a specialized tool is needed to get the pistons back in and you also need to line up small pins (I did take pictures if that is of any help).
