Evinrude.

You really ask a silly question. Do you prefer blondes or brunettes? I am going to marry one or the other tomorrow.

What size?, New or used?, For what use? 2 stroke or 4?

Exactly- Not a question anyone will respond to unless you provide some information. Is dealer availability, service/ support, etc important to you?

Tell us what is important to you and maybe we can give you an answer.

The only way a question is silly is if you already know the answer to it .I could have stated hp,year.I just thought it would be understood that they would be equal year, hp whatever.I just wanted to know what opinions here were about different brands and their reliability.Just what your experiences have been.Just wanted to take a poll and see which one would come up the most .I think that the comment about blondes or brunettes is silly .Can you talk about which one of those is more dependable.Thank away though.

You realize of course that in most things (and probably this one) there is no such thing as "best". Every choice is made on the basis of making both objective and subjective evaluations of a bunch of different factors and weigh them according to one's personal preferences. Objectivity is theoretically there, but it's mostly subjective. Especially the way you asked your question.

For example, you stated "reliability" above, yet in your original question you did not limit it to that. For me, "reliability" is indeed very important, but if all engines pass a certain threshold of "pretty darn reliable, very little difference", then I'll go to my other important factors such as price, local support and weight.

Plus, it actually is a pretty silly question because if you'd bothered to reading through the forums a little more before posting that question, you'd actually would see how many times this sort of question's been asked and how very lengthy discussions always (always) boil down to personal preference, not anything remotely resembling "best".

OK, you don't like "blond or brunette". How about: what color is best: Black, blue gray or white?

I never once in any of the posts use the word best .I just wanted to know what anybody that bothered to look at the post was using on their boat.just want to get a general consensus .Damn I wanted to take a little poll,I didn't know it was gonna cause such a stink.Damn and again please check the previous posts not one mention of the word best.just what everybody was using.and again I say thanks anyway though.

Re: MERCURY or YAMAHA VOTE PLEASE

I have a 2006 Yamaha 90 HP four stroke now and it's an excellent engine. Quite, smooth and strong. I love it. Before this I has a 1977 Mercury 70 HP 2 stroke. It too, was a great little engine. What I like about the old 2 stroke was the way that it started when it was warm. As fast as I could hit the key and let go of it - that's all it took and it was humming.

Honestly, I'd pay good money for either one of those two engines again. :)

I've had both, I prefer Mercury which I have now and the reason is price for parts.

Re: MERCURY or YAMAHA VOTE PLEASE

depends on your location.
I can tell you that warrenty issues are easier to deal with on a yamaha than merc.
BRP,when my 175 E-TEC blew, was also easy to deal with.
my experience as a tech for merc, suzuki and honda not so good and Volvo slighlty better.
blonde or brunette? I prefer females with a body temp :)

From the mid 80"s up through the last 5 or 6 years Japanese was generally considered "better" than U.S. made by most people in the trade. But in the last few years I don't think anyone thinks that a Mercury or Evinrude coming off the production line isn't a quality product. Roll the dice and buy whatever you want...They are all good today.

Evinrude first, Merc second and Yami last. I've owned all 3 and the Rude wins hands down for reliability, smoothness of operation and parts availability. I currently run a Yami on one of my boats and I hate it.

Brunettes are the most reliable as well. But you need to check to be sure they are natural, not aftermarket.

Thats MY opinion for the poll.

Re: MERCURY or YAMAHA VOTE PLEASE

:Dif your buying a mercury between 40hp though 115hp your buying a yamaha power head if your buying between 2.5hp though 30hp your buying a tohatsu painted black. Mercury parts are cheaper thats what I would buy. But if there and evinrude dealer in your area I would buy and e tec before any thing else.Oh and natural brunettes seem to be less maintenance and slightly more intelligent in my experiences :D.
