Mercury outboard 90h.p. Oil alarm -problem.

Own a 1989 Procraft with a 90 h.p. outboard. I replaced the oil tank a year or so ago, and things were good for a while. Then the oil alarm started churping while out on the water. Then a few weeks later, the churp turned into the alarm going off -when I turn the ignition key. Have plenty of oil in the resrvoir. Some possible causes would help. Thinking about just un-hooking the oil injection all together.. any opinions ? Thx . Bill.

If you heard a wimpy alarm, it is more likely to be a bad warning module or possibly a bad horn. The switch in the tank is just a switch, either open or closed. It won't cause chirping or irratic alarm tones. Only the module or the horn itself are so inclined.

is the alarm a steady tone or a repeated beep? also those oil tank have a float in the bottom with a magnet glued to them, it is common for them to fail.you may need another new tank.

I had an oil line break on the water once, and it was a piercing high ,toned, sound. It is making this sound when turning the ignition to accessory mode. It maybe a bad horn... May just go to pre-mix and be safe,and hit the lake..

turn ignition on and with out engine running, disconnect one of the wires from oil tank sensor located on bottom of oil tank if alarm stops tank is at fault. if alarm still sounds check for chafed wires, bad temp switch, grounded tan/blue wire. also what year is your engine.

I un-hooked the tan,navy blue striped wire coming from the tank sensor, and it stopped. I just bought this tank a year or so ago. Could it go bad that quick ? And I drained the tank, and got a coat hanger, and raised and lowered the float in there, and I guess that is some sort of switch, when your oil get's low it makes contact with a plate on the lower end ?

MY MISTAKE......... the tan/navy blue striped wire I un-hooked -coming from the controls up front, and the wire mounts to the engine. Un-hooking that wire made the alarm stop.
