Have a 2001 mercury 140hp outboard v6 with carbies, just finished changing spark plugs and starts like a dream but after a little while of running the oil warning beep comes on and doesn't turn off again. Have filled reservoir and back up oil container so there is no shortage of oil for the motor but maybe a blockage or something or pump not sucking oil. Engine not running extra hot and tell-tale average temperature also exhaust coming out same colour as usual so think that oil is mixing with fuel. Please help - not sure what I can do??

magnet probably has come loose from the float in oil tank....to check bend a stiff piece of wire at a 90 dregee angle and lift float up with ing switch up, if it stop beeping then its probably loose....engine need not be running.....this happened to mine had to get new tank with float assembly..........then I pulled mine apart and expoxyed it back together,, now got a spare

V6 is different, switch is in the cap. It also has motion detection, comparing it with an ignition signa. #2 cylinder misfiring will set off the oil alarm. So will a bad pump drive, bad motion sensor, bad tank switch, or a bad oil alert module.

There's a comprehensive troubleshooting sequence in the factory manual for that engine. It's really not hard to dog it to the bad part with an ordinary multimeter.
