I am in process of cleaning up a merc 8hp that was on a sailboat that stayed in water. Now the lower unit will not clean up. I have to lightly sand and paint. What kind of black paint is recommended? I have heard that rustoleum with a hardener would work.
Would like to hear about others experiences. thanks

I have used Phantom black paint with good results, I wipe after sanding with lacquer thinner then spray on paint. I then use a heat gun to bake it on (not really too hot).

Do your research ... You need a good primer, by good I'm referring to something along the lines of Zinc Chromate. It has protective properties against corrosion. Then go ahead a use the standard black ...

Shop around ... you shouldn't pay more then $7 a can (I had west marine price match) for both primer and paint.
There are all kinds of crazy crap out there that runs $30.00+ in some cases.
For compatibility reasons, I recommend using one brand of paint. I went with Moeller because of availability.
Don't skimp out on coverage or you will end up doing it again in a few years ...
I would go 2 coats of primer and 3+ finishing paint. Spray on the light side when you paint, the stuff tends to run if your not careful.

Hope that helps!

Re: mercury outboard paint

I had a similar project for my yamaha f225, But I ended up going to shop in my area that paints outboards, You can take your motor there or maybe you can give them a call and they can sell you the paint that they use. Definitely this will be the best paint to use since they're using it commercialy. they do great work there. I'm really happy with how my motor came out. Below is the link to their website. hope this helps.

Mercury dealers sell outboard primer, phantom black paint, and the clear coat. It is the same stuff the brand new Mercs are sprayed with.
