I just installed a NEW tilt gauge and a New sending unit on my 1999 merc 60hp outboard. All parts where Mercury Parts. The installation was a snap but my gauge is reading opposite of what the engines position is. I 180'ed the sending unit but that did'nt help. Any suggestions out there?.Regards..Tom

Then the gauge is not compatable with the sender. This is the only thing that will cause it to work backwards...Call the dealer where you got them and explain what's going on...
