Re: mercury outboard won't switch off

A good start is to get a Wiring Diagram from a Seloc or Clymers service manual for you Engine. At less than $40, you will learn plenty by tracing the right wire back to the control box.
In short,
RED is 12Vdc (live from Engine / battery)
Purple is 12Vdc (switched on from control box)
Black is Ground
Black / Yellow is Engine Kill (needs to ground to shut-off)Tan is Tach sender
Not knowing you engine, please verify with manual before miss-wiring the control box and switch.
Also check your kill-switch as you'll need that working too.
