I am curious if anyone has ever rebuilt the top end of a Mercury model 1500, 1978, 150hp??? My neighbor has one that he had apparently fired up on the lawn without a fake lake--well rest of story is probably concievable. With no H2O pump to cool, the engine ran for only a short distance after launching. I pulled the plugs and found aluminum splattered on 2 of the six plugs, as far as the other four cylinders I think that the rings probably collapsed. Is it possible to pull this power head down and do a piston and ring job by myslef???? Do the pistons push out the top or does the whole crank and rod assembly pull out the crank side of the motor??

Any help would be appreciated

Preston

Re: MERCURY OVERHAUL???

Preston, you are going to have to split the whole case to get to the pistons. It goes a little easier than it sounds. You will want to acid test the cylinders to see if the sleeves are worn through. If not, check Wiesco for a complete piston kit. I did one of mine a couple of years ago, for 2 piston scours, and Mercury could not sell me individual pistons and rings, I had to buy a whole set........Anyway sounds like you know what you are going to have to do.....Goodluck.....BushCat

After you disassemble the thing, you may find that there are alot of broken parts. You may want to consider a remanufactured powerhead as an alternative, esspecially if the cylinder walls are no good. It will probably be cheaper.

"You might or might not be interested in this..." Doesn't sound too much like high pressure to me, just a possible option for a member to consider. JMHO.
Backlash
