Just fired motor for first time today. Bought off ebay to replace mine.1984 150 hp Black Max Serial #5944849. No buzzer going off,but tell tale water is very hot to touch after about 1 min of run time.I searched overheating problems but not sure what is meant by blister to the touch. Can touch heads for about 10 secs.Removed t-stats still very hot. New water pump today with vanes facing the right way.

Install a temperature gauge, then you'll know for sure... Should only set ya back about $35 for the whole deal...

Re: Mercury Overheating?

redneckn

I have the 1985 Merc 150 Black Max. It doesn't sound as if yours is running hot. I don't think I can touch the heads for 10 secs on mine. Maybe I'm not as tolerant to heat as you! LOL. Anyways, snapperbait has the answer. I plan on installing a temp gauge on mine when I get around to the gauges. All of mine are bad. This has been a restore project. Good Luck!

Re: Mercury Overheating?

Merc's run hot out the tell tale. My 1982 9.8 Merc pisses about 120 degree water.
When I bought my motor I thought it was overheating also. I asked around and found out the water out the tell tale spits out around 120 degrees.
So I disconnected the hose that connects to the tell tale and ran it into a plastic gallon milk container.
I then shoved a meat thermometer in the jug and got somewhat of a temp reading. The lowest reading on the guage was 140 degrees so the needle didn't reach it but it looked to be around the 120 degree mark.
When I first felt the water out the tell tale the water kept getting hotter and hotter so I got worried and would shut it down. After taking the temp reading I now realize it will only reach around 120 degrees and then stay there.
The head on my outboard is hot to the touch also.

Re: Mercury Overheating?

Thanks for the info. I am going to pick up a temp gauge today. I have a water pressure gauge already. I guess i'll cut another hole and run both better safe than sorry :D
