I searched for this on here and could not locate any information. Does anyone have any experience or opinions on Mercury's extended warranty? My engine went into service the end of last month and I e-mailed Mercury and they advised that I have one year to purchase the extended warranty. I have a few questions regarding these warranties. Mind you, my boat motor came with a 2 year Mercury warranty.

1. Is the price negotiable between dealers? I know you can do this with car dealers. In fact, there is a GM dealer I think in Indiana that sells GM factory protection packages over the net at a cost lower than going down to your local dealer.

2. Do you think the prices quoted by Mercury are a fair value for what you receive, or don't receive? The extended warranty begins after the 2 year factory warranty expires.

1 year 273.00
2 year 483.00
3 year 651.00
4 year 903.00

The warranty is transferable and there is a 25 dollar deductable. My reason for asking is that I would be inclined to sell the boat within 2-3 years and in my opinion, having an additional factory warranty for a year would make it more marketable. All thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Boat: 2004 Sea Ray 180 3.0 liter Mercruiser

I think that sounds fair, I would read the details and make sure nothing that is important is not covered. It all seems well $273 dollars seems pretty cheap when you think the cost of a new drive or motor. I would just make sure you know what is and isn't covered.

This subject has been dicussed recently. I believe the consensus was to save your money. Extended warrantees are a huge cash cow and the likelyhood of you having a problem (that is covered) in the second 4 years is pretty slim. Any factory defects or weaknesses would certainly show up in the first two years.

I think if you read the fine print you would come to the same conclusion.

I tend to agree with Boomyal. If thier product was worth what you paid in the first place, the an extended warrenty should not be needed. Many a car/truck dealer have lost sales to me and many others for trying to push the exstende warrenty scam.

Re: Mercury Product Protection Plan

Thanks for everyone's replies. I'll have to look it over. I don't purchase extended warranties. In fact, every Honda or Lexus I've owned in the last 12 years has never needed to be in the shop. I was just looking at it from a resale point of view. By the way, the salesperson only mentioned that if I wanted an extended warranty, I needed to purchase it within 12 months and that I could buy it from the dealership or Mercury direct and that was all that was said about any extended warranties. He never pushed it at all and I appreciated that. Thanks again.

koz,

I basically asked the same question HERE. I decided against it. What type, size, etc. is your motor? My quote was much higher.

I guess I should have searched under "extended warranty" but I was looking for posts specifically detailing Mercury's Protection Plan. Thanks again and I'll review your post. Sorry about misplacing my post. I figured since it wasn't a question about the physical motor itself, this topic section would be ok. Won't happen again. Thanks!

Don't get too angry over your quote, you have a larger size motor than I do. I'm sure that factors in there somewhere. 2004 Mercury 3.0L

If you are sure you are going to sell it yourself outright the 273 dollars spent to give someone a 12 month warranty is a hell of an enticement for somebody to spend top dollar for a boat

Re: Mercury Product Protection Plan

Trading in something is almost as evil as buying the extended warranty:) I think I'm in agreement on the 273. That's certainly not alot of money when it comes down to selling a boat and it could make the difference in someone buying my boat over another. If I don't sell it, 273 isn't going to kill me and I'll have a year under my belt. Thanks again.
