Hey Guys,

I have this prop that came with my boat along with another spare. I'm not sure about this type of plastic insert that has no splines to mate with the output shaft. Can anyone give me some info. on this type of setup?
Here are a few pictures.

The motor is a 2001 Mercury 150 saltwater. I haven't taken to prop off that came with it to see what kind of set up it has. It's a SS and I'm real happy with the performance, I'm just wanting a good backup to keep on the boat and wanted to be sure this even belongs with the motor I have and was also curious about the pros and cons comparing this to the old spline set up. Thanks

Re: Mercury prop.

To clarify: That prop uses a bronze insert that plugs into the front. It has four splines that match the ones in the prop and is shaped to accept the Mercury prop nut lock washer. You can buy the complete hub kit for 35 bucks or so but I don't know if the bronze insert is sold separately. I did buy a used one for 10 bucks.

AND---By the way: Because the prop hub is the same inside diameter as those that use pressed-in rubbeer hubs I did try pressing in a rubber hub. I hoped that the four flats would help make positive drive of the hub. It spun out in the first 30 seconds of use. I guess the slight taper messes up the geometry.

But now, at least I know it can't be done.

You are using it in salt and have not yet removed the prop! DO IT NOW and grease the shaft. Do this at least twice a season to prevent the prop from binding on the shaft due to corrosion.

It's okay......I bought the boat with a bad motor less than a year ago and had it reworked about six months ago, at that time it was completely serviced and antisieze put on the splines while the shop had it. We've only used the boat three of four times since then. I do appreciate the tip and all the informative info. would it be common to use that bronze insert in a replacement prop? Wouldn't a new prop come with one? Again, I'm just curiouse, I've not had to deal with this type of prop before.

Re: Mercury prop.

Mercury props that use their Flo Torque replaceable hub system do not come with the hub. The hub is a separate sale item.

Solas says that their Rubex hub will also fit Mercury and Michigan props.

The Solas Rubex hub # RBX-102 ; $ 36.99 here.

Here is a picture of the newer type flo torque setup. The splined end for the hub is pictured to give you an idea of what to look for. View attachment 176002 It locks the propshaft to the 4 slot replaceable hub. You can buy a spar plastic hub in case your porp spins on the spot. Ebay make sure you find the correct type for your propshaft mercury prop kit | eBay

Re: Mercury prop.

Great info. Guys, thanks a bunch. I guess the metal spline insert got misplaced somewhere along the line, because the plastic insert looks new. I'll pull my SS prop and be sure it has the same set up and if it does, I'll pull the plastic insert from this one and store just the insert in my on-board tool kit to save space. Thanks again for such great responses.
