I'm about to start reassembly of my 1500. I picked up a set of mercury ring compressors. I have a 1973 Mercury service manual. I must say that the Mercury service manual was probably written by the same people that write Chiltons manuals. "Take engine apart. Put engine back together". It sucks. Anyway is there a good write up somewhere on how to use those 3 ring compressors to assemble a 6 cylinder engine or am I actually supposed to have 6 clamps?

Re: Mercury ring compressor

You need 6 I think and it is a pain to do that way.
I just did mine the old school way, old school ring compressor and one at a time into the block.
Then install crank...

With a blind hole inline?

Yup!
Obviously they go in from the crankside...

And you stick the needles to the races with heavy grease.....and it takes a bit of time...and you sort your needles, cages and races so they don't get mixed up.

Do you have room to get the torque wrench in to torque the caps?

Just make them snug. You have the rod bolts with lock nuts right? If you have the cap screws w/o nuts, you need to install new ones, as the old ones will fail. Don't ask me how I know....

Make them snug? They still need to be torqued to properly stretch the bolt. 150 in/lbs if I remember right.

I would much rather have the bolts. Not in the cards though.

You should has 4 offset and 2 straight compressors, and if you have a Merc manual it will show how to install them on crankshaft and drop crank. The 2 straights are on #1 & #2 cylinder, offset on the rest.
