I've got a Merc outboard, the cover says it's a 150, but the guy that it came from said it's a 200 and he put the cover on it because he fished tournaments that would only allow a 150 on this boat (max rating).

Is there a way to tell from the serial no. what the hp is? I think it's an '84 or so.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Paul

Sure, post the serial number and I'll try to look it up.

Re: Mercury serial no./ hp info

It appears to be a 1983 model year.

Unfortunately, the serial number falls within the range of numbers used for both the 150hp and the 200hp.

Hopefully, someone else will have another way to identify between the two.

Sorry.

Roscoe is on it.

Either way it's a 1983 Model

200HP 6203991 - 6435502 1983 V6

150HP 6220254 - 6443212 1983 V6

Don't know what the HP really is, though! :(

Re: Mercury serial no./ hp info

Thanks for the replies.

Hooty-- I just bought the boat, it's my first one, and I'm not sure where to look to see if the reed plates are horz. or vert.

I paid $1000 for motor and 17' Hydra Sport bass boat w/ trailer. The boat's in great condition but the top end of the Merc is hamburger... appears to have been run just a bit lean.

The reason for this whole post is that I'm looking to perhaps trade off the bottom end towards something a little smaller (85-100hp).

Any advice?

Thanks
Paul
