Mercury serial numbers

Hello,
Bought a boat today and it has a Mercury 115 on the back of 1980-81 vintage. This is the first Mercury engine I have ever owned and I went to look up parts for it and man is the catalogue different for these motors!! I can't get the serial number to come up anywhere. It has on the tag 5725107 and it apparently isn't any good. This is odd and new to me and I'm confused with this numbering system. Should I just go by the listings where we have a range from say 500200-634000 and do it that way?

Thanks,
Nick

Re: Mercury serial numbers

Thanks for the info I appreciate it. Where did you see that? I saw those model numbers but I didn't see how you determine which one you have. This Mercury stuff is really weird from other manufacturers but I guess I better get used to it huh.

Nick
