i have a mid 70's mercury 50 hp, and right at the water line, the shift shaft rusted through enough to break off, and the part has been discontinued, any ideas on how i could make a replacement? and what i need to take off to get the old shaft out the easiest?

thanks

Re: mercury shift shaft

I suspect your best bet is to go to old merc.com and buy a used one, but if you can't find one I guess you could weld up a new one if the spline at the bottom is reusable. I am assuming it has a spline like my 60hp. If you can determine the exact length you could take a length of rod and weld it to the piect of spline shaft and just drill a hole in the top end for a roll pin. Am assuming it has a roll pin in the top like my 60hp. Be carefull not to break the shift lever when punching out the roll pin at the top.............Jerry
