I have a '94 Baja Blast with SJ 90. It has never started without first having to "prime" it with starting fluid. Once warm, it ran great and started immediately unless it had sat for a while, then more starting fluid.
I recently had to replace the rev limiter (previous post).
This past weekend, the boat ran great for an entire day. Around the time to take it in the starter gear failed to engage the flywheel and I couldn't get it started. I did, a few minutes later, manage to use a screwdriver to help the gear up while turning the key. I got it to catch enough to start with more starting fluid. The kids drove it back to the slip with no problem.
I thought the starter issue may be due to a battery going low. I put the charger on overnight. The next day I started with the screwdriver trick and starting fluid. I thought it was running fine, but the kids were unable to get past 20mph, half of it's normal speed. It would run but did not appear to reach the rpms needed for full speed and wot. It acted as if it had fuel starvation at WOT. The boat became increasingly hard to start over the course of the next 24 hours. I eventually had to replace the plugs and finally got it started with starting fluid.
Today, I checked the fuel flow. I removed the fuel line that runs to the top of the top carb and which supplies fuel to all three. I checked flow under the starter and it was pulsating and sporadic. I could squeeze the bulb and get plenty of flow, but under the pump only, at starter only rpm's, it pulsed and spit. I removed the fuel pump and everything looked good. I did not notice any holes or tears in the diaphram. I have new on order.
I pulled the vent lines and they were clear. I pulled the bottom carb and removed the bowl. It looked pretty clean, but there was some junk in the vent line for this carb. I cleaned it good.
Does this sound like a fuel problem only, or could there be electronic issues? I have an almost new black stator. If not the fuel pump should I look at the bulb and gas line from the tank? Tank vent?
Also, there is a fuel enrichener on the motor, but I have a choke option on the key. There is a sticker saying that no throttle movement is necessary for starting, yet the manual says to slide throttle lever forward in neutral. What is the starting procedure? Yellow wires to enrichener ohm out at 25 cold.
