I have a 2000 mercury 50 hp 2 stroke outboard motor that is hard to start and will stall out while I am trolling and in idle. Also sometimes when I set my throttle it will take time to acheive correct speed. I have replaced spark plugs and had carburetor adjusted, with no luck. Does anyone know what the problem could be? frustrated fisherman!

You need to test spark quality to help determine if you have an ignition problem or a fuel problem.

2000 is not an old engine, I would verify a hot bright blue spark on both cylinders, once that's done you can then clean the carb or have it done.

Re: Mercury stalling out?

I have a similar problem with my 25 HP Merc. With the engine out of the water it starts fine but dies when I drop back into the water. Spent most of the day trying to get back to the dock. Got to my fishing hole fine but when it was time to leave it wouldn't start until I pulled it up, it would run and sound fine until I dropped it back down. Help please.

Radiodad,

It is not good manners to hijack someone else's thread, even tho you may have the same motor and/or same problems.

Post an original thread.

Specify the make, model, serial if it is really old, of your motor/boat combo, what symptoms you are having and what you have done so far, whether that has made any improvement or not.

The rest of us can then better advise you what test to use to better define the problem and suggest how best to proceed on a budget.

Sounds like you do a lot of trolling. Have you ever considered changing to a 4 stroke, they do much better at this.

Long periods of trolling can lead to fouling of the plugs in two strokes as you well know. Finally getting it fired up and then running it hard to clear it can leave heavier than normal carbon deposits (carbonization) in the ring lands.

Over time, that can lead to rings not moving freely and result in the symptoms you describe.

Try running Merc Quickclean in your fuel regularly. You may also consider decarbing it.

When you know you're going to be trolling a lot, carry an extra set of plugs with you. I have two spare sets with me all the time and I never reuse old plugs.
