Hello,

I am having some trouble with the starter on a mercury 65HP O/B . When I try to start it I can see & hear that the starter is spinning in a clockwise direction, but the teeth never kick up to spin the flywheel ?? Do I just need to take it off and make sure nothing is sticking ? When I take a screwdriver and spin it clockwise it does move upward ... so I am not sure where to go from here ? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Mercury starter problems

sounds like the bendix is failing to engage, some times it is due to a lack of lub on the shaft, try a shot of oil on the starter shaft and see if it will engage, Luck

Re: Mercury starter problems

Just had time to work on it again this weekend and after getting a better battery connection it kicked up and spun the flywheel. Got her started, but now have to get a new impeller.

Thanks for the help
