Started fine to go fishing and when I got to launch it would not start got it home and found the teeth on starter and flywheel were tooth to tooth instead of meshed turned nut on starter and it fell into place and it seems ok now. There is a handful of teeth that are boogered up on starter gear side. Motor is 20 yrs old.Has anyone had this happen? Thanks for all information in advance

It happens when the starter bolts are loose or excessive wear in the bendix. Or a bad crank bearing.
