I just replaced my 1984 35hp Mercury w/ a 1996 50hp Evinrude that has been converted to premix.

Can I wire the old mercury tachometer to work with the new motor? What kind of damage can it cause if I try and guess wrong?

I've done it the other way around, i.e. Johnson Tach with Merc motor. I'd just try it. You're unlikely to cause any damage to the tach or rectifier/regulator.

If it's a US Marine tach, check for 6 pulse switch on back, if it isn't selectable, I doubt you'll have any luck.
