g'day mate's<br /><br />just bought a 1973 80hp merc (800 cc thunder bolt) and the bloke in the shop said I needed to buy a ridgy didg mercury tacho as others (brands) wont fit<br />my question is is he fair dinkem or does he just want to sell me a new one ( at $400 australian dollar [$200 us]) or is there one that I can use.<br /><br />cheers Daryl<br /><br /> A bad day fishin is still better than a good day workin

Outboards must have a stator with four to twelve magnetic poles. This is where the tach gets its signal. Tachs (most modern) will not work on engines with magneto or lighting coil ignitions. You have the older ignition system and I think your mechanic is giving you the straight scoop.

buy a "tiny tach" for $35, hooks up to a plug wire<br />and ground & works on all motors.
