Attempting to fix the spark on my old 1973 mercury thunderbolt 110 9.8. I am not sure if the ground wire is in the right place, if I should rewire it, or if I need the kill switch connected for it to spark.

first, welcome aboard

on a 2-stroke with magneto ignition, you ground the ignition to kill spark. that is what the kill switch does.

Need to check whether that motor needs circuit open or closed to make spark

The wire/coil colors make it a phase maker ignition and kill switch has to be closed to run. Also the colors are not in correct location. Need to pull flywheel and see what wires wwhere repaired
