Re: Mercury Thunderbolt model mark 58 serial no 1155298.What do I have here?
You've got a 1958 45hp 4-cylinder, 44 cui. motor there. If it's been well maintained and cared for, you've got a real gem there. That motor was the first of over 30 years of 44-cubic inch Mercs using the same basic design, and part of over 40 years of inline 4s. Kinda like the small-block Chevies of the outboard world.

It has a great power to weight ratio - you'd be hard pressed to find a new outboard with a better one. It's fairly basic and straighforward for servicing, although a manual is a necessity. Parts, owner's manuals and Mercury-issue service manuals are available from Grubb's Marine at
www.oldmercs.com. I don't think i-boats has anything that goes back that far in their library, but it might be worth a look.

Being that the design was around a long time, there's lots of parts out there, and lots of parts motors. If compression is good and the motor is complete, then it's certainly worth putting some tune-up time and money into... Have fun!
- Scott
