Re: Mercury tilt motor removal
Does it have a single ram, or does it have two short pegs and a ram? A single ram trim unit will come out without too much trouble. If it has the pegs as well, then you have a bit more of a challenge ahead.

The single ram tilt is just supported by an upper and lower pin. The pins are held in by retaining pins that you have to pry out. Lock the tilt latch in place and turn the manual relief valve out a few turns. Pry out the retaining pins and push out the pivot pins. It should remove without much effort. Naturally you'll need to disconnect the wires. You don't have to remove the upper pin if you don't want to, but I prefer to have the whole unit out and vised.

With the 3-ram, you have to loosen the tilt tube nuts until they're flush with the ends of the tube. You don't need to remove the tube. Tilt the motor and lock the tilt bracket in place. Support the motor at the powerhead and gearcase by hanging it to support the motor's weight. Remove the starboard mounting bolts from the transom. Remove the bolts holding the trim unit, pull the loose clamp bracket out and tilt it up. That should give you good access to the motor and you don't have to completely remove the unit.
