Ok guys let's beat the horse one more time on this subject so I can make sure I got this right. I have a 1983 Mercury 80hp and the carb cover says to set WOT timing at 30* BTDC at cranking speed of 300 rpm which is 27* at 5500 rpm running. So from that I get doing the static timing you will drop about 3* running. So if I set the timing at say 27* by cranking it timing will be around 24* running at 5500 rpm. Would that be ok for my motor or should I set it lower like 24* cranking so it will drop to 21* running at 5500. Also my cover also says pickup 4* ATDC but I read on here that 2-3* BTDC is fine. So which do i need to go with on that? Thanks a million for your help here.

I think you are right on to retard the timing a couple of degrees given the bad gas we have....leave it set at 27 and you will be fine...You are correct on the 2-3%.....

So static time it at 27* and running will be like 24-25* and that will be fine. I am running low dome pistons also just had it bored .030 over.
