mercury top cowl

please a very dumb question. I have an older boat with 50 hp mercury older can not see serial number bought from widow I( can not get top cowl off, undid catch on front removed side cowling.first merc ever had used to other brands.

You may have an early Merc 500 with the bolt on top cowl. Undo the 4 nuts/washers and lift the cowl straight up. If the motor is newer, the middle diagram shows flippers.

If the motor is newer, there are two flippers on the rear side below the cowl. Pull away from the motor to the side and lift the cowl up.

forgot to add there was one bolt in center of rear on cowl removed nut no help.

There is usually a flip up lever in the front of the top cowling. It can take a strong finger to flip it up.

then the cowling lifts up in front and you push it back slightly to unlatch the rear.

BTW - that looks like a mid-late 70s motor
