Hi. I have a 1997 60 ELPTO. Ser. # 0G565161. When I start the engine cold
water squirts out a moulded drain/weep hole in the thermostat cover. Almost more than what comes out the normal outlet hose. Is this a bad sign or is this normal? After a minute or two most of the water flow stops. This is my first outboard so I want to learn to identify problems before I head down the river. Thank you for any advice. :)

Re: Mercury Tracker 60hp coolant flow question.

Looks like I have to answer my own question this time! Under the thermostat cover is a thermastat and a poppit valve. The poppit valve I believe is a water pressure regulator. The valve is a diaphram type and is positioned opposite the drain hole in the cover. The diaphram ruptured, allowing water to be pushed out of the hole under force. It's a good thing I didn't go to the river yet!:D
