Just purchased a new boat powerd by 75 merc 4 stroke. I noticed all the specs were identical from 75 to 115. Just in case i need a little more umfffff. can anybody tell me how hard it would be to get 90 hp out of a 75. I heard something about changing the chip and go, but I would prefer a more reliable source. Thanks in advance.

Re: mercury upgrades

I heard the same thing for a 25 HP... being the same as the 40 HP, and I thought about doing the same as you, but was talked out of it. I was reminded that doing so would void the warranty and I didn't wont to do that. Good thing I didn't, it's been in the shop more than on the water. Just something to think about. Good luck.

Here we go again. The 115 is a 116 CI (1741 CC) engine. The 75 and 90 are 97 CI (1596 CC) blocks. You therefore cannot convert either a 75 or a 90 to a 115. To determine what needs to change, to make a 90 out of a 75, go to the Mercury Marine web site and click on Parts Express. Enter your model number and a model number for the engine you want to upgrade to. Then all you have to do is compare every part number for both engines. Those numbers that are different are different parts. Just because an engine has the same displacement (CC) does not mean everything inside that engine is the same. All it means is the bore and stroke are the same. Heads, cams, exhaust, intake, EFI components such as injectors and the ECM are just a few. Gear ratio may be another. On some small engines there were carburetor restrictor plates that could be removed, and in some cases a larger carb would get you 5 HP or so. It is very easy for the manufacturer to create these variations. It is very expensive to make the changes after the fact. The parts cost will make it very cost prohibitive in most cases. Price four new injectors or an ECM and you will understand. You too will come to the conclusion that you sould have bought a 90.

Re: mercury upgrades

I asked about a 90 but the lund explorer 17 foot has a maximum of 75hp for a tiller handle. The dealer would not put a 90hp and when i bring it into Canada the border would never let it threw. But if it had a steering wheel it is capable of handaling a 90, same boat. I am sure the 75 will be ok but i was getting ifo. incase i was disapointed. If it was simple and not to pricy i would have thought about it, but if it is not worth it @#$! it.
