I have just purchased a Mercury, "50 Classic" outboard. Can someone help with the date please? Ser.# 0C103600

I bought this engine to replace my old Classic 50(1986). This engine was stored for several years and looks almost brand new. I am not very mechanical but I assumed that it was a worth while buy. Can I expect much more power from a newer engine of the same size and make?

-thanks, all

Robert
Looks like an '89 Model 50 HP. I don't think you will see a huge gain in performance, unless your old motor was in bad shape. But it should be somewhat better running overall if this one is preforming properly. Good Luck,

50HP B396036 - C221499= 1989 3 cyl

Re: Mercury, what year is it?

Thanks alot Rick......
The engine appears to be a 4 cyclinder, does that make a difference?
Here goes a dumb question, if I may.....what would a good price be for this engine be? Exterior, cowl, and inside all look almost new. Does not appear to have ever been run in salt. It is hard to even find a oil smear anywhere. Owner says he bought it from a gentleman who had it on a bass boat and was upgrading size wise.

Right you are! That serial # comes up as a 4 Cyl. Let me look a little further or I'm sure someone else will get it(The Year).

Robert
After looking around a bit, this is what you have. The "50" threw me off at first, as I was thinking 50 HP. But it is a 45 HP "Classic 50". Parts and Diagrams can be had at the site below. Just put in "C103600", dropping the first "O". As for price, I wouldn't be surprised to see an asking price of $1300-$1500, if it's in great shape.

45HP B393190 - 1989 4 cyl

mercurypartsexpress

or here: 45 (4 CYL.) 45 HP 4 CYL. 1987-1989 B110789 and up USA

web page

Re: Mercury, what year is it?

Hey Rick, you are the MAN, thanks for the help. I was told it was a late 80's motor. I do notice that it is different in a few ways then my 86. The tilt and trim appear to be integrated into the main body of the motor where as my old engine had a hydrolic arm on each side of the outboard. Also, the fuel bowl appears to be different.

BTW, you nailed the price as well, man your good.

-Robert
