I have a Mercury XR2 150 HP on a 18 ft Skeeter - once I pull into the dock and tie the boat at my slip, I leave and come back the next day and my motor has leaked all the way down, and I have to hit the "trim up" to bring it back up before I start it. Once I am out on the water, I am constantly having to turn around and check the level of my motor and make sure that it is not leaking down and sometimes I have to trim up the motor when I am planed out.

Any ideas on the issue? And also could you provide any documentation about how to fix?

Could be as simple as the emergency tilt release being a bit loose. Don't know for sure where it is on your motor, but it has one. Find it in the owner's or maintenance manual.

If that's snug, then some valve in the tilt system is failing.

hope it helps

Re: Mercury XR2 150 HP - tilt leaks off and motor goes down

I have checked the release on the side of the motor. It takes a flat screwdriver. I loosened it and the motor dropped, and then snugged it good and tight. But after placing it back in the water, the motor was still all the way down after it was in the water for about a day. It still leaked off.

How many valves are in the tilt system? Do you know of a link to a website that shows a diagram of the tilt system? It has two "valves or pistons", "not sure what you call them. Also, could it just be low on oil? If so, what kind do I add?.....and how much?

Thank you for your quick response.

Mine takes ATF. Your service manual should have the proper fill/bleed procedures, and if necessary rebuild procedure. They're pretty easy systems - just a few o'rings and valves. Usually the o-rings loose their ability to seal. I'm going to pull mine off and rebuild this fall after the season ends.

That is what I was hoping for just some loose o-rings. But, unfortunatley I do not have a service manual. That is why I asked if anyone knew of a link to a website that could provide me a detailed description of what all is involved with this particualr issue.

I had experienced an issue several months ago with my motor and someone here "cannot remember", provided me with a couple of links that showed me the details of my motor and was very helpful for me determining the issue that I had with that motor.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

The below guide may be of help to you. I would suggest getting a manual before doing much work on the trim system.
