Does anybody knows what is the market share of outboard engines companies in the US and in the rest of the world?
I know that Mercury is a leader with about 32% of the market in US, and the Japanes companies have around 56%. Yamaha is on the second place with 30%, Suzuki has about 12%, Honda 10% and Tohatsu/Nissan 4%. Johnson/Evinrude have 12% (10 years ago Johnson/Evinrude have 24% of the market). Can anybody confirm that my infos about market share in outboad industry are correct?
I'd like that only guys who have the correct official infos reply on my question. I am concider infos from http://www.boating-industry.com/ and http://www.ibinews.com as correct, but this articles are only for professional marine outboard market analyst and are not for free.

Re: Mercury,Yamaha,Suzuki... market share

I can't help with specific numbers, but make sure that the Mercury numbers don't include sterndrives. Last I heard Mercury was #1 only because of MerCruiser. Otherwise Yamaha gets top billing on outboards. (That's from both Merc and Yami factory guys.) I'm also not sure of how Tohatsu might be considered since Mercury owns a hefty chunk of Tohatsu and sells a lot of their motors with black paint and Mercury stickers on them (the under 40Hp models).

Re: Mercury,Yamaha,Suzuki... market share

Yamaha is the largest producer of outboards in the world. Tohatsu is number two.
For the U.S by the label on the engine:

Mercury 40%
Yamaha 29%
Evinrude/Tohatsu/Honda each at roughly 8%
Suzuki 7%

Mercury does not own a single penny or yen of Tohatsu. Tohatsu and Mercury do have a seperate real estate company, they they both own 50% shares of that company that owns land, a building and some machinery. Tohatsu then leases that property from the jointly owned company to produce Tohatsu engines. A big junk of those Tohatsu engines are sold under contract to Mercury as a private label.

Each manufacturer reports its numbers to the NMMA. So the only actual published number is the total number of engines sold and no further breakdown is supposed to be available. However, if you know the total number, and you have friends at each of the manufacturers....You can get a farily accurate idea of who sold what. The % I have listed are now in flux and was based on information available from mid February. The numbers have changed for the bottom four since then with Suzuki being up, Honda and Evinrude going down substantally and Tohatsu dipping slightly. It will be at least 6 months before it turns into real numbers.
