Ok I have rubbed ... Buffed .. Wet sanded .. polished . fussed... cussed and buffed some more. The metal flake finish on my Baja just will not gloss up and stay that way. It might look ok for a day or two but it does not look right in the sunlight.. it picks up strange dull areas. Its a metal flake Silver ... Ok what do I do to make it look good again ?? BTW I just bought the boat last summer .. man I tried all types of polishes and waxes and sand paper from 320 grit all the way down to 2000 grit . shew!!

Does it look good wet? Have a look at this. It's not a polish, it's a coating. My boat has a black hull and will not keep a polished shine. This stuff makes it look wet all the time.

Gelcoat Restoration System By Vertglas

c/6
Hooty

Have you tried it on a clearcoat finish! Im and old bodyman, and feel if it looks too good to be true it probably is! Im all ears though as I need something like this on my boat also! My boat is grey and you can see the waterline pretty bad! It has a red stripe in it that is partially bad! If it will work on red I think it will work on anything!

How about it, has anyone else used this stuff!

I was about to post that your only choice was to clearcoat it again with Urethane, but will hold off!

LubeDude

I have seen that advertized here on the forum , I might be wrong but it looks like a temp fix. My Baja is a 84 also ! spooky !! What is involved in redoing the gelcoat?
Also from what I have read Clearcoating over it is a tempary fix though may last a few years at best . My boat is Garaged all the time now. and only out on the weekends.

I did a search last night on google, there are several companies destributing similar products! If you beleive the hype it appears that these products last all year and only require one more coat in the sprimg and you are ready to go all summer!

One product actually said to sand the effected area with 800 grit sandpaper to remove the oxidation untill you got down to the color, then aply four coats of the product, had some impressive pictures! I think I will try a product in the spring that is manufactured right here in Oregon! Ill post how it works with pictures and all!!

that doesnt help you now though!

Check out this site!

http://www.diy-boat.com/Pages/Archives/links/demosgr.html

LubeDude

Gelcoat is not made to go on a boat. It's made to go a mold. There's a multitude of paints out there that will do ten times the job re-gelcoating will do and about one tenth the time and work.

c/6
Hooty

As an old autobody man, Ill put my 2 C. in!

As far as a clear coat to put over faded clear Gelcoat, Imrom has my vote! There is NOTHING else as durrable and shinny as Imron! It does however have one draw back! If you need to polish it, Its like a rock! You will need to use the very finest wet paper, (2000) to be able to polish it! It will last ten times longer than Gel coat!!

LubeDude
