I hear a metal on metal grinding noise when I put my 65 hp mercury in reverse. It does not make any bad noise when in forward gear. The foot had just a very little bit of water in it. Is there anything I can do to make the noise stop? or is this a sign that the the lower unit is going out? Another question is how can you adjust a thottle cable to make the engine run faster, I believe my cable is streched or not adjusted right. Thanks Tim

Drain and replace the lube in your l/u, Tim. When you get the old lube out look for metal shavings in it. Some real fine shavings are normal because of clutch wear. You'd best bet is get a manual to see how to adjust your cables. Your shift cable may need adjusting and causing reverse gear noise also.

c/6

Hooty

My vote goes with Hooty. You may just have a misadjusted cable.

Re: metal noise from lower unit only when in reverse

I drained the lower unit and replaced the oil. There was nothing stuck to the drain screw indicating gear wear. while the engine was running I put it in reverse ( had foot inside a big trash can of water) and I found a rod ( some type of linkage in front of the foot running up into the bottom of the motor, I grabbed that and it stopped the loud vibration sound. I think this is some type of shift rod, but how can I adjust it to stop the vibrating sound. My seloc manual does not cover this. The most interesting thing about this problem is that it does not make this noise of vibrate when in forward gear. Any advice or help? If someone has a diagram of foot for a 73' 65hp model 650 mercury please e-mail it to me (heyitstim@yahoo.com) or post a link I can go to. I hope you can help me with this problem. Thanks tim

That's obviously the problem and it still may be out of adjustment. If the Seloc manual doesn't explaine how to adjust the shift and throttle cables, I think I'd get a oem manual.

c/6

Hooty
