I was winterizing my 88 70 hp merc today and when I pulled the drain plug on the lower unit, I noticed a small amount of metal debris on the plug. Is this normal after a season, or should I be concerned? I am assuming that the plug is magnetic in order to trap metal particles to keep them from floating around and causing extra wear. Is this true? Or is it there to forarn of a propblem?

A small qty of fine greyish powder on the magnetic plugs is normal wear and tear. Pieces of metal, small or large, indicate something is coming apart.

Thanks for the response. There was not a lot but I wondered because the unit was rebuilt last year. I figured some was inevitable.<br />Thanks again.
