Re: metal roofs

Not gonna be cheap to do it right, Salty, but worth every cent in hailstorm country.

They tried hard to talk me out of it when they built this house.. . $2 grand extra over 25 year shingles. . . but I stuck to it.

So far it has saved me $1,000 in insurance premiums and survived 4 hailstorms without a noticable dent.

Besides, nothing sounds as sweet as rain on a "tin" roof.

Go for it, and good luck. :)

Re: metal roofs

Steel roofs are common here in NZ, usually colorsteel these days, which comes in a variety of profiles, the most common being good old corrugated.

When laying it keep checking your parallel with the end of the roof as it is easy to run out, but is also easily corrected.

A google for colorsteel will get the homepage which has downloadable fitting guides.

Re: metal roofs

LOts of choices now days. Thickness, style, color, texture, etc.
Friend just had hers installed 2 weeks ago.
Looks like cedar shake shingles.

http://www.classicroof.com/timbercreek.htm

The sheets go across the roof not from peak to eave.
Cost here $14,000 for a very small house.

Another friend is having hers done next month, using the cheap stuff, will run $6,000

The only way to go. You can do it if you are good with a tape measurer
