Metal shavings in lower unit

Under my previous post (A different view of creamy oil), I mentioned that I was changing the lower unit oil after I bought a used boat.

I am still a "newbie" boat owner and learning MANY things. One thing I have been told is metal shavings in the lower unit are BAD! You guessed it, the magnets on my top and bottom plug both had metal shavings on them when I went to change the oil the first time. The two subsequent times I changed it, I found no such shavings but I only ran it for 20 minutes also.

The boat pushed fine the few times I've had it on the water and I've heard no unusual or grinding noises. But I am seeking the opinion of this group because I have the boat in the shop right now with a place I don't particularly trust- they have a history on two occasions of hitting me with $500 repair bills.

Anyway, how many shavings are too many? When do you know if the lower unit needs to be replaced and how can I know if the shop is telling me the truth? I thought I saw dollar signs flash in the mechanics eyes when I asked him to check the motor when he was replacing the bad seals- maybe it was the morning sun though.

I've read on here, if you find shavings or pieces of metal the size of a grain of sand or larger, it's bad, bad, bad. Normal wear and tear shavings aren't really an indication your lower unit is need of repair. How big were the shavings you saw?

Well, I look like the idiot now (see your other post)... This is a first. Any metal shaving are bad I would guess, Is your prop shaft straight?

Howdy, Anthony.

Your lower end will normally produce powder-like bits of metal. That is normal wear and that is why your plugs are magnetic. It is also why we change the grease annually (or more often if you make lots of hours).

Good luck. :)

JB hit it on the head... Magnets are there to keep the "normal" shavings from getting back in the system after coming off.. keep good oil in there and dont worry yourself with it. If you start hearing "loud" clanking noise when you shift or see an increase in shavings during normal oil change..then you need repairs... otherwise run it and enjoy yourself on the water...
