Methods of proper engine identification

When I bought the boat from my friend, he referenced the engine as a 1983. The Title has 1983 J115TLCTE. However, the plate at the mid-section on the engine has J115TLCRD (indicating a 1984). It looks like a previous owner had been playing Frankenstein because I find parts that are '84 parts and parts that are '83 parts (and a lot are interchangeable, so it's ok). I have been referencing it as an '84.

Now that I am doing an overhaul, I want to make it as proper as I can. This is especially important, I believe, because there are two different styles of carburetors for these 2 year models. It currently has early-production 1983's carbs on it and I don't know if this is correct for the rest of the engine or not. Is there another way I can properly identify exactly what I have? If not, do I go with the title or go with the stamp plate (or something else)?

The more I tear in to this project, the more baffled I become (and the more I am kicking myself for even buying the darn thing).

The 84 models were painted a certain colour.----Post pictures of the motor and cowling.

As soon as I am back home, I will do that. In the meantime, the cowling is white or off-white. The rest is painted gray; gray block, housing, shroud, midsection.

There it is 64osby, right under my nose. It has J115TLCRD and then my serial number. I was mistaken on my title. It doesn't have model, just serial and year. Title says 1983 but block and stamp plate say 1984, based on the model number. Serial numbers match on all 3. So safe to say it is a TLCRD, which would be an '84?

Actually, the carb change came about mid-year during the 83 model year. All late 83's had your type carbs. The pistons did change part numbers from 83 to 84, but it is just a normal product-improvement supercession. They are interchangeable.
