Hello All:

Let me start by saying I am not a boat mechanic so bear with me. I bought the boat in the attached pics 6 yrs ago.. Its had its share of work done.. the latest catastrophy was a muskrat eating a hole in boot and the boat sinking.. Got the boot repaired and have been trying to get the boat running all summer.. We replaced starter, bunch of electrical, rebuilt carb, repplaced fuel filter, pulled manifolds and cleaned , new points.. starts great.. Changed the oil several times because it looked milky.. We got one good test drive in and a tap we were hearing (that would quite after she warmed up).. turned into an intetrmittent CLACK.. the mechanic working on it said we should just put a bullet in it:) His though is a Spun Bearing.. he said that with the oil still being Milky (Having some water in it).. the bearings were probably getting hot and one is probably spun.. He said that if I continued to run it.. It would heat up and then after cooling.. would seize and it could be catastrophic on startup after that..

The boat is clean and like I said.. it starts right up.. jumps out of the water when you accelerate with no hesitation.. and can pull a house...has one spongy spot on the stringer near the engine.. and like I said.. the Clak!!

I am going to have another mechanic give me a second opinion on it tommorow.. but, if its a major issue like that.. I believe the engine would need to be pulled and torn apart.. That sounds expensive..

I paid $3500 6 years ago and easily have $2500 over 6 yrs into it in rapairs including (new spider gear, boot, clutchpack, flywheel, 3 starters, 3 carb rebuilds, hoses, plug wires, points, electrical troubleshooting, gas tank pulled and cleaned out)

I use it on an inland Lake for pulling tubes and skiers.. I was a newbie when I bought it and everyone said it was not meant to be used for that and was more of a small sized great lake fishing boat..?? many good time though..

I believe my title says its a 74.. (by the way.. if anyone can give me the actual make and model on this and what they think the year is.. I would greatly appreciate it..)

I am verging on doing a $2000 obo sale and then again.. if its only $500 to repair??

So.. is this boat worth putting big money into.. what would I be able to get for it with that Clak.. and/or how much should I put into it..

Any thoughts.. Advice?

Re: MFG Boat - Engine Issue

The odds of selling that with a blown engine for more than 500[trailer] are slim to none.Yes it sounds like a rod knock which turns into a rebuild. The cheapest way is to find the same block in a junkyard and switch out all the marine parts. Not sure why the starter motors are not warranty items and why the carbs were rebuilt 3 times, seems strange to me.Nothing wrong with it being a ski/tubing boat on lake or ocean for that matter. Not a big fan of outdrives, period.Like the outboards on boats under 21-24 feet.Sounds like most of your crazy money spent went into the Volvo. So you wait for the second opinion or actual diagnoses of it and proceed from there. At some point you have to cut your losses/decide if you want to put more into it vs buying another boat.

You say the title says its a '74. If that is correct then there should be a H.I.N. on the transom. The first 3 letters are a code which you can find on the net for who made it. The last 2 will be the year it was made. http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.html is the reference. No H.I.N. usually means its pre '72. Good luck
