Has anyone ever removed a top deck from a MFG? They seem to be glued on, no fasteners at all. What I'm really curious about is how was it re-attached

Yea.....
Sort of hoping that someone, some where in the world, has removed a MFG deck. I did however discover, the material used is a polyester. Knowing that is a big plus.

PS your stuff is on the way!

You remove a deck by cutting it out with a saw. The MFG could of used some sort of caulk or resin to attach the underside to the stringers and then tabbed in the sides around the hull with glass, Thick glass that has to be cut and grinded.
Hope that helps you bud.

Thanks Guys..... I'm talking the top deck (cap) Getting it off seems easy enough. Getting it back on is the real challange. Here is a pic of the stuff that was used to "glue" the cap on.

Re: MFG deck removal question

First order of business is to remove the aluminum rub rail by removing the screws or drilling out the rivets that are holding it on. You might be surprised at what you find once it has been removed.

Thanks Wood !
I appreciate your reply

Had the rub rail off.... It's held on with what looks like #8 x 1'' round head screws.... These only go into that "stuff".. Nothing else beneath the rail. Weird Huh? I gotta assume it's some type of resin that was used as a glue. I can take a section off, if another pic would help.

Re: MFG deck removal question

Soooooo..... how does the top cap fit over the hull? Does it extend out over the "Crap" or does the "Crap" encapsulate the topcap?

I think in this case, "a picture is worth a thousand words" I'll pop a section of rub rail off and post some more pics. I'll also see if I can get a shot up/under the gunnel. Sure would be nice to figure this out

Thanks again!

I have the rub rail off. No more fasteners.

Here is a shot looking up. Also you can see the top deck's fiberglass lip

You can see how much more the deck cap hangs over the hull

This pic is inside the cockpit looking up at the gunnel

One more.. You can see where some of this stuff has oozed out between the hull side and the top deck

So, this kinda leads me back to my question. Has anyone ever taken a deck off a MFG? I'm stumped!

Thanks very much for the reply oops!

A Flanged joint...hummm. Are they common? At least now, I know what I got. Do you think the white stuff is resin of some kind? This stuff looks like swiss cheese with all the air bubbles in it. Also it is fairly thick, and I don't see any fibers in it.

Thanks again

BTW I've been watching your hull extension... What a project

Re: MFG deck removal question

You might try posting this on Fiberglassics.com. There are a LOT of good guys on there and MFG boats are a common commodity. Maybe somebody on there can tell you how to accomplish this. I have never seen anything like this.

Re: MFG deck removal question

Hey Ed ..... I kind of wiggled and jiggled mine with a rubber hammer and screw driver until it was loose. I didn't beat on it but just kind of tapped here and there and worked the screwdriver in and it wasn't easy but it came loose. I only worked it back far enough to cut it so I could remove and replace the transom.

You can see how it came loose:

Re: MFG deck removal question

Hey Ed ...... I kind of have an idea but not sure it will work. I am going to fill the cap with some kind of adhesive or just a PB mix and then clamp it down onto the hull until it cures and then drill a few holes thru the cap and hull and bolt it down like all the other boats.
