Poly is just fine. On my Sea Ray restore I used only poly. That is what the boat was built with so that is what I used. Lasted 40 years with poly and rotted wood, so it will be fine for another 40 plus. When I build my boats I tend to use epoxy. Mainly because the wood in my builds is the structural part, and I just want a thin layer of glass to waterproof. In my opinion it is easier to put a thin layer of glass down with epoxy. I also 'glue' all my joints together in the builds with epoxy. I trust it more for a structural glue in a wood boat build then poly.

I have to go the poly route myself, and actually did as well. It cost less, does the job without any issues what so ever, and will adhere to your original hull as well. Can't say that for epoxy. If you could only see how solid polyester resins and fiberglass material cure up, you would have no issues going that route either. JMHO

Good you have the merc ... I hear tell the OMC 's are bad news ..
I would think you don't need to add glass to the inside .. You can install the plywood then build your thickness with the glass going on the inside ..
My understanding with I/O the thickness at the key hole is pretty important to get right ...

I pulled out 2 peices of 3/4 inch ply one full sheet covering the hole back and then a peice that was about 8 inch above the key hole and 6 inchs past the first stringer

Shouldn't be a hazmat fee for the 1708 I would think .. You can do a combination of csm and woven cloth ... Csm down first followed by the woven wet on wet ...
