Wifey ran the microwave for 12 minutes with nothing in it (and of coarse I cant say anything cause she didnt know, right :( ) It was really hot all over the unit and the unit seemed dead, then it cooled down a bit and seemed to come back alive. But, it wont heat anymore, everything else seems OK, just no heating.

Magnetron dead, or perhaps relay, or heaven forbid, a fuse blown?

I went to open it up, but it had security torx screws and I dont have that tool.

What do you think guys, buy the tools to open it up, or cough up the 160 to replace?

Re: Microwave problems

Assembled in China!

I ran it on 50% power and you can definately hear the relay clicking on and off and the cooling fan changes speed indicating a high current draw.

Will the megentron draw current, but not have any output?

Re: Microwave problems

Sounds like the magnatron has shorted and then opened the circuit. Cheaper to buy a new one vs having it fixed. Mark it up as a learning experience for the spouse.

I do some of the repairs on our stores commercial units. The kids are always doing something to them that is not surposed to be done. Seems like I'm always replacing magnatrons or a primary tranxformer when the thermal link fails. When it fails to blow, it is usually because it was turned on with nothing in the oven.
