mid 70's evinrude 6 hp problem

I just got a very clean 6hp Evinrude for my 12 foot Jon boat. It runs but spits and sputters on idle some times. Also spits and sputters when trying to idle up, will not get close to full throttle. When at full throttle position it acts like maybe it is at ? to ? throttle.Will not stay running in the slow or shift position. Also how can I tell what year it is?

OK so I started reading other threads and found out that I need to get a modle #. the problems sound like they could be a handfull of things if anybody could help me norrow it down that would be great.

Chances are about 99% that it is running on one cylinder. Pull off one spark plug wire and ground it , then start the motor. Any difference? No? Then do the same thing with the other wire. Betcha it won't be any different on one and won't even run with the other one grounded. That's the good one. Fix the cause and you will be ready to go. Could be a spark plug, points, coil, wire, or other things we can guess at.

one more ? how do I ground out the plug wire.

Stick a bolt or something in the boot and let it lay against a heavy metal part. Or you could get fancy and make up a wire with a couple of alligator clips on the ends.

you was right, I have this auto spark tester thing that you put between the plug and wire that has a lite in it. anyhow I assume that I need a buller to get the fly wheel off, stupid ? how do I get it back on.
