Mid 70's Merccruiser

Ok Ive got a question...I have a mid .70s mercruiser 165 , and am wondering the purpose of the vacuum gauge on the dash.. I understand the reason for one in an airplane, but boat? Anyone share any insights? Thanks..Paul

At the time, Merc thought it was a good idea............. They don't use them anymore.
