I have a 1991 3.0L Mercruiser with an alpha one gen 2 outdrive. I pulled the lower unit today to fix my leaking shift shaft seal and to replace the water pump. I followed the manual for everything and installed a new water pump face seal. Problem is that there wasn't an old one on there. I looked in the upper unit and can't see it there either. Is that weird or what?

I also pulled the prop to lubricate the shaft and there was a weird crust between the thrust hub and the bearing carrier assy. It chipped off pretty easy but it looks like it may have had a bit of metal in it at one time. Is it a part that I am now needing to replace or is it just hard water crust?

pump face seal could have been burned off from an overheat or deterioration, the crust would be the prop shaft anode ,a replacable item

Item # 19 on page 3B-8 and 3B-9 of service manual # 14? It has a screw and washer to hold it on?
