might buy merc 135 hp i have lower unit question

just looked at this and i pulled the plug on lower unit, it had a lot of shiney sparkels (metal shavings) really fine.He said oil has not been changed for 3 yrs is this normal to see this?<br />i assume it might be from the clutch dogs,or unit is trashed? we run motor it sounds good and shifts good,but we did not take it to the lake.<br />is this a good motor? this is on a 1990 18'starcraft fishmaster with a merc 9.9 kicker<br />he wants $5800. <br /><br /> Thanks for help

This is the advice I found:<br /><br />We want to look for water in oil and "metal sawdust" in the oil. <br />Both are good early indicators of problems to come.<br /><br />If you observed over a tablespoon of water in the oil or a large amount of metal shaving, a couple more checks are in order:<br /><br />If your lower drain plug doesn't have a magnet attached on the end, ("round as a tooth-pick and 'bout long as Abe's ear on a Five") then you could probe the lower hole with a small magnet and see if you retrieve any larger chips or fragments of metal.<br /><br />Chunks and chips warrant a tear-down and look-see. <br /><br />Some twinkling shavings in oil could be normal "wear in" of gears but nothing larger should be ignored!

Thanks for the tips,I called him back and said I will change oil and would like to take it to the lake, then check and see how many chunks are coming out and stuck on magnet he said that sounds good. I never seen any shavings just lots of twinkling will let you know results after tuesday.

I would expect to have to replace the lower unit shortly,if you see more shavings(twinkling)after 1 run.
